I Can Read in French Phonics (JeSLEF)
Do your students make the same reading mistakes over and over? Do you understand the need for phonics instruction but aren’t sure where to begin?
This systematic and explicit phonics program follows a carefully constructed scope and sequence. New sounds are added gradually and intentionally, teaching students to actually read words rather than just guess.
The program contains three components: a Teacher’s Manual, Slides and Student Booklets for all 16 Modules. Early Modules can be introduced in Kindergarten or Grade 1, helping students master the basics with words like la, si and de. Later Modules will help older students master complex graphemes like euil (écureuil) and tion (natation).
Lessons follow these steps:
- phonemic awareness as a warm-up (find pre-made word lists in Pratique phonémique)
- phonics (including daily review)
- grapheme work (using white boards/letter tiles)
- word reading
- spelling/dictation
- decodable texts
Common pitfalls are addressed, including…
- silent letters: le corps, ils regardent, les bottes, le lézard
- Decoding nasal vowels: pense, renard; singe, simple; il tient, la tienne

Sound Wall and Sound Chart
This Sound Wall helps students connect different graphemes—such as è, ai, and ei – to their common phoneme—the sound /è/. The Sound Chart is like a small version of the Sound Wall which students can use individually as a reference when reading and writing. It is a perfect addition to I Can Read in French Phonics + Pratique phonémique.
Grades 4-6
Succès syntaxique
Available August 2025
Students in the Junior grades often lack the necessary knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure to communicate effectively. We hear these problems when our students speak, and we know that for many, writing feels like an insurmountable challenge.
When working with children in this age group, I recognized the need for explicit instruction in building sentences (syntax), as well as gender/number accords and verb conjugation (grammar), but I never knew where to begin. I found myself throwing linguistics at the wall—verbes du 1er groupe, passé composé, adjectifs—hoping some of that language would stick.
Succès syntaxique to the rescue!
We have developed a Scope and Sequence to take the guesswork out of your language instruction. The program contains ready-made lessons, slides and activities. The best part? Your language instruction is pre-planned for the entire school year!
Lessons include:
- Structured oral language activities to build communication skills
- Explicit instruction of new vocabulary
- Learning about sentences and parts of speech
- Mastering common verb conjugations and suffixes, such as “je nage, je dis, je rends.”
